Of the moment // 11.18.16

One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!Image may be NSFW.

Let me just say this: I am the biggest believer in taking time off between jobs. Even though I don’t totally get the full benefits of this (blog posts to write, blog emails to answer!), it’s still so incredible to have time where you actually CAN’T worry about work. Although I feel lucky to travel so much even when I do have a job, it’s a pretty artful balance: even when Instagram shows cocktails, I’m often answering work emails. So it’s been so great to have a couple of weeks to catch up with friends, go to midday Pilates classes, bake cookies and do a bit of traveling: when I was singing the praises of my current schedule to my boyfriend’s parents, they chuckled and agreed. In retirement, that’s life every day! GOALS.

Namaste

Granted, I haven’t really needed I this week (thank you, Caribbean Sea and sunshine) but Natural Calm is one of my favorite recent finds. It’s basically a magnesium supplement that helps you relax: I don’t know if it’s actually true (although both a doctor and my acupuncturist have verified the calming benefits of magnesium) or a placebo effect, but it really does help! I’ve started packing these individual serving packets in case of stressful airport situations and keeping a few at my desk for overwhelming days, and they’ve been so helpful!

Reads

I read Hillbilly Elegy in one plane ride: I honestly could not put it down. A few friends recommended it as a way to understand the Trump victory, but I was most intrigued when I saw it was a memoir. It’s written by a self-proclaimed hillbilly out of Appalachian Kentucky, and it delves into the “white trash” culture and how they interact with and react to the government. I found it both an extremely compelling and a very politically relevant read.Image may be NSFW.

Words

“You can’t make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.” -Michelle Obama

This weekend, I’m relaxing in Brooklyn after whirlwind trips to Amelia Island and Barbados! I plan mostly on snuggling with a post-spay Gertie, checking out the new Bowery location of New York Pilates and catching up with some favorites while watching football.
